Scotch ratings, reviews and tasting notes by two average joes

Eye – Light gold

Nose – The Laphroaig Quarter Cask is, like all the scotch from the Laphroaig distillery, VERY peaty! If often, peated scotch also means heavily smoky, well that one isn’t. After the first waft of peat, one discovers scents of herbs, evergreen (maybe spruce or juniper) and vanilla. There is a sweet quality to it and, in the end, a little phenol/medicinal whiff . Very rich and full, it has a very well balanced nose and is very inviting!

Taste – The first sip is a bit like taking a concentrate of all the flavors I like in a scotch, boil it until maximum reduction and then, by some unknown alchemy, make it into a drink that is soft, rich, well balanced and simply delicious. No powerful alcohol kicking you in the gums here (not that I don’t like it, but sometimes less is better), just flavors. I takes all the room, it’s rich, round, has a lot of peat some green, maybe more spruce and some oak. It has a very nice oily and covering mouth feeling and the long and smooth finish is peppery and a bit salty with some oak.

Remarks – I had read and heard a lot of good (to remain humble) about that specific scotch and I had high expectation. Moreover, Nic and my tasting buddy Alex, had made the same remark lately. “Looking at your reviews, it seems like you haven’t tasted a great one in a while…” I realized that indeed, it had been a few tasting since I did find something that had me think “That’s great stuff!”. So I went for a scotch renowned to be a great one and I was very well rewarded. The rating might get higher as I definitely intend to taste it again (maybe get a bottle for my Cabinet) and get a better appreciation. But all in all, that’s a great one!

P.S. I might even revisit the Laphroaig 10 Years and see if I missed something there.
